Guided Visit of the “Via delle Chiese”
This experience, offered by the Cooperativa Agricola Nuovo Cilento, takes place in San Mauro Cilento, in the hamlet of Casalsoprano, where the guided “Via delle Chiese” begins.
The starting point is the chapel of the Church of the Madonna Addolorata, originally dedicated to Saint Sophia. According to tradition, this area was one of the gathering points for exiles from the Byzantine Empire. Concerned about possible Byzantine-Orthodox influence, the Church renamed it the Madonna of the Seven Sorrows (Addolorata). The walk continues to the Church of the Carmine, now deconsecrated, which preserves 15th-century frescoes and a statue of the Madonna dressed in period clothing. The itinerary then reaches Palazzo Paleologo, the place of exile of Rogerio Paleologo and his family. The final stop is the Church of the Holy Spirit, also built at the time of the Paleologi’s arrival in San Mauro and now beautifully restored.
