Piana del Sele
Hi-tech greenhouses, dairies and olive mills in the heart of the agricultural district

Day 1 – Smart greenhouses and the “Green Gold” of the Piana

The itinerary begins in the heart of the Piana del Sele, one of the most advanced agricultural districts in Europe, renowned for the production of fourth-range baby leaf salads. Travelling through cutting-edge horticultural farms, visitors can discover how thousands of hectares of greenhouses integrate drones, sensors and satellite analysis to preserve resources and guarantee outstanding quality standards. The famous Rucola della Piana del Sele IGP is the proud ambassador of this innovative agricultural model.

📌 Several local companies offer educational tours illustrating the entire production cycle, from sowing to automated packaging. It is an opportunity to discover the origins of iconic products such as Pomodoro Fiaschello Battipagliese, Carciofo di Paestum IGP and Cavolfiore della Piana del Sele IGP, often featured in technical tastings.

In the afternoon, the journey moves towards the hilly areas between Battipaglia, Campagna and the Monti Picentini. Here, among centuries-old olive groves, the Olio extravergine d’oliva DOP Colline Salernitane is produced. A visit to a modern olive mill allows visitors to appreciate the balance between traditional extraction methods and cold-pressing technologies. A guided olive oil tourism experience reveals the aromatic notes and organoleptic properties of this essential pillar of the Mediterranean Diet. The day ends at the relaxed pace of a local farmhouse, where rural cuisine transforms the harvest into an authentic gastronomic experience.

Day 2 – Mozzarella di Bufala and Nocciola di Giffoni

The second day celebrates the world-famous icons of the region.
The morning is dedicated to a visit to an outstanding dairy farm, where visitors can witness the traditional production of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP: from milk coagulation to stretching, culminating in the spectacular hand “mozzatura” process.
The warmth of the freshly shaped product and the aroma of fresh milk create a unique and unforgettable sensory experience.
The landscape then changes, welcoming the orderly rows of hazelnut groves dedicated to the Nocciola di Giffoni IGP. A walk among the orchards reveals the characteristics of this prestigious variety, ending with tastings that highlight its roasting qualities and versatility.
In the late afternoon, the experience continues with the discovery of artisanal creations made from buffalo milk: not only aged cheeses, caciocavalli and creamy ricottas, but also modern interpretations such as yoghurt, ice creams and delicate desserts.
As the sun sets, the itinerary comes to an end among the rural landscapes of the Piana del Sele and the scents of its cultivated fields.

📌 Given the geographical proximity, a visit to the Templi di Paestum – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – represents the natural cultural completion of the journey. For those seeking a more active experience, the itinerary can be enriched with cooking workshops or sensory analysis masterclasses dedicated to local products, transforming the visit into a true learning experience in gastronomy.
